Lea Ypi ile söyleşi: Haysiyet ve haysiyetsizlik üzerine
Lea Ypi, author of the book Freedom: Growing Up While Everything Falls Apart*, which has garnered significant attention in Turkey, will be meeting with readers at Loca on the evening of June 29th. Ypi, whose new book *Indignity: A Life Reshaped was also published by YKY earlier this month, will answer questions from journalist Ebru D. Dedeoğlu and sign copies of her book. Ypi is in Istanbul to present a paper titled "Moral Socialism" at the 32nd World Congress of the International Association for Legal Philosophy and Social Philosophy (IVR 2026 Istanbul), taking place at Kadir Has University from June 28th to July 3rd. In her memoir Freedom*, political scientist and author Ypi compares the communist era of Albania, where she was born and raised, with its present state, asking the questions, "Which is more real?", "Which is more free?" In *Dishonor: A Life Reshaped*, translated into Turkish by İlknur Özdemir, who also translated Özgür's work, everything begins with a single photograph: a picture of a young woman smiling in luxury on the snowy peaks of the Alps in the winter of 1941. When this image of her grandmother Leman, whose kindness and wisdom she relied on throughout her life, is lynched on social media with the label of "traitor," Lea Ypi descends into the dark corridors of the past to save not only a woman, but also the honor of a family. Blending the cold documents of the archives with the warmth of memories, she reconstructs a life. *Dishonor is a heartbreaking portrait of a woman trying to find her way amidst the immense upheaval that stretches from the now vanished world of the Ottoman aristocracy to the founding of modern Greece and Albania, a global financial crisis, the horrors of war, and the rise of communism in the Balkans. Tonight at Loca, Lea Ypi will be speaking with Ebru D. Dedeoğlu about her efforts to reveal the true identity of someone she loved and to liberate the dead from the arrogance of history, occasionally venturing into the backstreets of political and social history. Lea Ypi is an Albanian-born political scientist and writer. Born in Tirana in 1979, she is a professor of political theory at the London School of Economics. Having spent her childhood under the Enver Hoxha regime, Ypi gained international recognition with her memoir, *Free: Growing Up While Everything Falls Apart*, which recounts the collapse of communism in Albania and the transition to brutal capitalism. Ebru D. Dedeoğlu worked in the marketing department at Doğan Kitap. Her interviews on literature, publishing, and other cultural and artistic fields are published in the newspapers Oksijen and T24.
