Ville de contrastes, Amsterdam a gardé ses canaux au charme d'antan, comme le canal des brasseurs (Brouwersgracht) et a su se renouveler en créant des quartiers totalement nouveaux, futuristes et spectaculaires comme IJ Dok ou en mélangeant les styles comme sur Westerdok, un quai bucolique bordé de bâtiments modernes et de maisons flottantes avec vue sur l'île Bickerseiland.
