Joy as Chania Girls students shift from learning in tents to Ksh. 10 million modern classrooms

It was all smiles as Form 2 students at MP Shah Chania Girls high School in Thika shifted to their new classrooms after learning under tents for the last one year. The students have been learning under very harsh conditions due to lack of enough classrooms, after the government introduced the 100% primary to secondary transition a few years ago. Speaking during the handing over of the classrooms from the Thika Town NG-CDF to the school management, Chief Principal Hellen Wambui Muhuni thanked area MP Alice Ng’ang’a for the gesture, terming it as a very big milestone. She noted that over the last 1½ years, 150 girls learnt under unconducive learning environment which included cold weather and dusty conditions. Her sentiments were echoed by the school’s PA Chairperson, Alice Njau, who said that as parents, they were worried about their children’s health status which also affected learning. However, they noted that the school still needed a computer lab as the existing one was too small to comfortably accommodate the computer students. Daniel Mburu Muchiri, a representative of the area MP, noted that the classrooms cost about Ksh. 10 million to construct. He added that it took them just 3 months to complete the classrooms, just in time before the onset of the long rains.
