The 442nd Regimental Combat Team in France
The 442nd Regimental Combat Team in France With Brad Shirakawa Part of our Operation Dragoon series • Operation Dragoon and South of France Part of our US Army series • US Army in WWII Part of our Minorities series • Minorities and Indigenous Peoples in WWII Part of our 1944 Series • 1944 The 442nd Infantry regiment (and the 100th Infantry Battalion) is probably best known as one of the most highly decorated US Army unit for its size and length of service, and as a fighting unit composed almost entirely of second-generation American soldiers of Japanese ancestry (Nisei) including many from Hawaii. The 442nd arrived in France from Italy in October 1944 to join the 36th Infantry Division as part of the 7th Army. By early winter 1944, Allied forces were about 40 miles from the France/Germany border, but the formidable Vosges Mountains brought a new type of terrain experience for the men of the 442nd. To proceed towards the border, the town of Bruyeres would need to be taken, which was located in a valley bordered by four hills - all heavily defended by the Germans. Besides the hilly terrain and dense forest, the soldiers encountered thick fog, mud, rain and cold temperatures, conditions that were extremely challenging for fighting. Brad is an expert on the 442nd RCT in France, and also the 522nd Field Artillery Battalion, that was often attached to the 442nd. His Uncle was in the 442 and his father's sister's husband in the 522. https://fredyamamotoschool.wordpress....
