It follows the Japanese invasion of India in 1944, the battles of Manipur, the Allied pursuit through Burma, the liberation of Singapore, and the violent aftermath of war in Indonesia. But at its heart, this is a book about men under terrible pressure: Indian soldiers, many of them ordinary recruits and support personnel from every corner of undivided India, fighting a brutal enemy while serving an empire whose rule at home was already beginning to crack. After Pearl Harbor, Japan swept through Malaya, Singapore, and Burma. By March 1942, Rangoon had fallen, the Burma Road was cut, and India appeared vulnerable. The British Indian Army expanded from about 200,000 troops in 1939 to nearly 2.5 million, becoming the largest volunteer army of the war. In March 1944, the Japanese 15th Army crossed the Chindwin and invaded India, aiming to seize Imphal and Kohima, cut the Dimapur–Imphal road, and break Allied power in the East. The battles that followed became Japan’s greatest land defeat. On June 22, Allied columns from Kohima and Imphal linked up at Milestone 109, reopening the road; the Japanese Operation U-Go was officially abandoned on July 3. The campaign then turned into a relentless pursuit through Burma. Indian divisions, tanks, engineers, and Gurkha reconnaissance teams pushed the Japanese back through broken roads, rivers, jungle, and monsoon. Japan surrendered in August 1945; Singapore was formally recaptured in September. But the war experience did not end there. In Indonesia, newly declared independence collided with Allied efforts to restore Dutch authority, and Indian troops found themselves drawn into another Asian people’s struggle against colonial rule.
