​The Future of Jewish Status in Progressive Judaism

One of the most significant aspects of The Movement for Progressive Judaism's work is that of our Batei Din in welcoming people on status journeys. Part of that is the increasing number of people coming new to Judaism through conversion – finding Progressive Judaism attractive even in this challenging time. Another part is the radical halachic status innovation of Progressive Judaism – our mechanism to allow someone with one Jewish parent to be recognised as Jewish, irrespective of which parent is Jewish. This wide-ranging and open conversation – chaired by MPJ Co-Lead Rabbi Josh Levy and featuring Rabbi Anna Wolfson, Chair of the Conference of Liberal Rabbis and Cantors, together with the heads of our two Batei Din, Rabbi Dr Jonathan Romain and Rabbi Mark Solomon – explores how the Movement and our wonderfully welcoming communities undertake this work. The panellists also discuss the history of Jewish status, the developments that have come about through bringing Reform and Liberal Judaism together into one Movement, and what the future may hold.
