In low register, you can mute the edge of the sound and emphasize smoky tone. It works well, especially when you play ballad. For tenor sax players, it’s important to get this subtone technique. To play subtone, I open my throat and make the chamber of my mouth bigger, and move my chin back a little bit, and using the inside of lip, slightly mute the reed. Either way with the subtone or not, long tone exercise with sforzando, crescendo and decrescendo helps you to get fat sound. I recommend you to listen to Gene Ammons and Von Freeman. Subtone is not weaker tone than regular tone. To play subtone, you need good air support by abdominal breathing. Summary Of Video
