We Are In Cabo Verde – Africa! | Ep. 205

We have arrived in Africa, specifically in Cape Verde or Cabo Verde off the west coasts of Mauritania and Senegal. We chose to participate in the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers ‘plus’ version of their cross-Atlantic rally specifically because they have a planned stop-over in this amazing African nation. Our home port during our visit is in Mindelo harbor on the northwestern coast of Saint Vincent. In this episode, we show two of the ten islands that make up this archipelago nation – Saint Vincent and Santo Antão. Stick around to the end, the sights on Santo Antão are nothing short of stunning! Enjoy. Join us next time as we cross the mid Atlantic ocean, from Cabo Verde to the island of Grenada in the Caribbean Sea – almost 2200 nautical miles! Thanks for watching! Supplemental information on Cabo Verde: These islands were first settled by Portuguese explorers in the 15th century and this represented one of the first European settlements in the tropics. Cape Verde didn’t become independent until 1975. Today, it is a member of the African Union and it has a stable democracy though it is one of the least populated countries in Africa. Cabo Verde, officially the Republic of Cabo Verde is an independent island country consisting of 10 volcanic islands. These are broken down into the windward (or northern-most) islands (the Ilhas do Barlavento in Portuguese) and the leeward or the Ilhas do Sotavento). These are named such because the prevailing wind in this region is from the northeast. All of the islands in the archipelago are inhabited except for one – Santa Luzia. The total combined land area of Cape Verde is almost 1600 square miles and the population is a little over 500,000 – as of 2024. These islands lie between 370 and 530 miles west of the coast of Africa – specifically Cap Verde, the western most point of the continent of Africa. Highest point on Santo Antão is Tope de Coroa at 1,979 meters elevation, almost 6500 feet high!
