Kobern-gondorf Castle and Moselle Vineyards + Cochem in Germany. And beautiful Lille in France

As we come to the end of our 30 day trip in June 2025 we first spend a couple of nights overlooking the Mosel/Moselle in Dieblich. The weather was once again hot and sunny. While here we decided that we would cross the river and enjoy a short walk before the heat became too much. Our walk climbed through the vineyards above Kobern-Gondorf to the ruins of Schloss Kobern Niederburg, one of so many castles that decorate the hills above the river. In a short time we were enjoying wonderful views along the Mosel in both directions. We continued upwards, following stations of the cross, to the Matthias Kapelle which dates back around 800 years. It was inspired by the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. We next head upstream for a lunch stop in pretty Cochem. This popular riverside town is dominated by another of the amazing castles that are such a feature of the landscape. Finally we head homewards stopping just one night in the French city of Lille. The city was excitedly awaiting the start of the Tour de France which was due to start here with the Grand Depart in just five days time. Zum Abschluss unserer 30-tägigen Reise im Juni 2025 verbrachten wir zunächst einige Nächte in Dieblich mit Blick auf die Mosel. Das Wetter war erneut heiß und sonnig. Wir beschlossen, den Fluss zu überqueren und einen kurzen Spaziergang zu unternehmen, bevor die Hitze zu stark wurde. Unser Weg führte durch die Weinberge oberhalb von Kobern-Gondorf hinauf zur Ruine der Niederburg Kobern – einer der vielen Burgen, die die Hügel über dem Fluss säumen. Schon bald genossen wir einen herrlichen Ausblick auf den Mosellauf in beide Richtungen. Wir wanderten weiter bergauf, entlang der Stationen eines Kreuzwegs, bis zur rund 800 Jahre alten Matthiaskapelle. Sie wurde nach dem Vorbild der Grabeskirche in Jerusalem errichtet. Anschließend fuhren wir flussaufwärts nach Cochem, um dort zu Mittag zu essen. Das hübsche Städtchen am Flussufer wird von einer weiteren jener beeindruckenden Burgen überragt, die so charakteristisch für diese Landschaft sind. Schließlich machten wir uns auf den Heimweg und legten noch einen Zwischenstopp für eine Nacht in der französischen Stadt Lille ein.
