November 24th, 2001 — Making the routine one-hour journey from Berlin, Crossair Flight #3597 is on its final approach to Zurich. It‘s one of the last planes scheduled to land before the airport shuts down for the night. In the final minutes before landing, the crew is given a last-minute runway change. Just minutes before landing, however, the pilots still cannot see the runway. They decide to abort the manoeuvre and apply full power to all four engines to get their plane to climb. They’re too late. The aircraft clips the treetops below and plunges into a hillside. 24 of the 33 people on board are killed. Investigators scour the wreckage for clues. They do find an improperly installed oil pressure gauge which calls the maintenance of the aircraft into question. But after further study, mechanical failure is ruled out as a cause.
