Operation Anthropoid - The Escape & The Betrayal | WW2 Podcast Episode: 81

Operation Anthropoid: The Escape & The Betrayal follows the dramatic aftermath of the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich in occupied Czechoslovakia. In this WW2 podcast episode, we examine how Jozef Gabčík, Jan Kubiš, and their fellow resistance fighters escaped the attack site and disappeared into Prague’s underground network. As Nazi authorities launched a massive manhunt, local families, priests, and resistance members risked execution by hiding the agents and supplying them with food, information, and shelter. The fugitives eventually took refuge inside the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius, believing its crypt could protect them until an escape route was arranged. Their position was exposed after paratrooper Karel Čurda surrendered to the Gestapo and revealed the names of resistance contacts. Arrests, torture, and interrogations then led German forces to the church. On June 18, 1942, hundreds of SS and police troops surrounded the building. After hours of gunfire, grenades, flooding attempts, and desperate resistance, the trapped agents chose death rather than capture. Discover the escape, betrayal, final siege, and extraordinary courage behind the tragic conclusion of Operation Anthropoid. #WW2Podcast #WorldWarII #MilitaryHistory
