Paint Defects 101 Episode 3: Orange Peel
In episode 3 of our Paint Defects 101 series, Kevin Ansell, 3M application engineer, talks about orange peel. This defect occurs when there is either not enough or too much texture on the panel. Important notes (00:25) Wear proper PPE: safety glasses, protective gloves, respirator and whatever else you need for the job. This video is intended for a professional setting such as a body shop or paint shop. Make sure to check OEM recommendations to confirm you’re using the correct adhesive for the job. Identifying Orange Peel (00:54) How to spot orange peel, and how to know if you have the right amount of texture on the panel. Spray Gun Settings (01:20) Tips and Tricks for Spotting the Defect (01:49) Removing Excessive Orange Peel (02:05) Start with an 1500-2000-grit abrasive on a DA sander. We recommend using a dust extraction system combined with a net abrasive to help remove the dust and contaminants from the environment in your shop. Important note: There are of course many factors and variables that can affect an individual repair, so the technician and repair facility need to evaluate each specific application and repair process, including relevant vehicle, part and OEM guidelines, and determine what is appropriate for that repair.
