There was a vast amount of potential in the story, and in fact, the story of the man BEHIND Ant was nearly as interesting and engaging as the book itself. While rough around the edges, Ant found an early home at Arcana and told the story of adolescent Hanna Washington, a troubled young girl from a broken home and inhabiting and quickly crumbling world. Along with the character driven elements of the story in Hanna's real life, she chronicled the adventures of a superhero who she named, Ant - a heroine capable of righting all the wrongs that Hanna was surrounded with daily. The character was based on a concept that Gully had come up while serving time in jail, where he earned his GED and spent his time trying to genuinely better himself. Drawing inspiration from a single ant that he saw freely weaving in and out of the bars on his cell, Gully decided that he was going to be a professional illustrator. Much of his personal life leaked into the numerous Ant titles over the years, and as Hanna Washington's life fell apart, so to did Gully's and Ant's. Eventually the promising young artist would make a move to Image to work with his outspoken fan, and then publisher at Image, Erik Larsen, before promptly having a falling out with not only Larsen and Image, but then Marvel. Plagued by a series of disastrous missteps, Gully career would culminate with what I can only describe as an all out war with Larsen on social media. This is the story of a promising young artist who literally built himself up from nothing, to become a professional illustrator on a successful creator owned character at the very imprint that had inspired him to start making comics in the first place, to virtually disappearing off of the map - and more importantly, what happened in between and WHY.
