The Real Reason Alex Ross Paints Costumes The Way He Does

Every urban myth has a grain of truth if you dig deep enough, but nothing could have prepared me for the strange conflicting information that I would come across when researching Alex Ross' rather infamous run in with production during Spider-Man 2 in 2004. Ross had previously been asked to provide a costume design, which remain unused and the ensuing disagreement suddenly became front page news. Media outlets attempted to paint Ross as difficult to work with for no reason and the incident somehow still remains somewhat of an albatross around his neck. While digging into exactly what ACTUALLY happened I stumbled onto something of a looking glass into Ross' most fundamental approaches to composition and costumes. As is often the case with Ross, the answers where much more intelligent and thought out than I had previously imagined and I thought I would share some of what I discovered here with you all tonight.
