Midweek Musing: Xenophobia Is a Growing Global Problem This week’s Midweek Musing is about xenophobia and why it has become bigger than any one country. We’ve seen disturbing incidents in South Africa, Northern Ireland, the United States, and many other places around the world. Xenophobia is not isolated. It is growing, and travelers need to understand what it is, how it shows up, and why it matters. This conversation is especially important if you travel internationally or if you’re thinking about immigrating to another country. Leaving the United States doesn’t mean you’ll never encounter racism, xenophobia, nationalism, anti-Blackness, or hostility toward immigrants and outsiders. In this video, I explain why xenophobia is becoming a global issue, why we need to stop making excuses for it, and why all of us need to recognize it, call it out, and understand how to navigate it when we travel or choose to immigrate abroad.
