The West Kyushu Shinkansen, which opened on September 23, 2022, runs from Takeo-Onsen to Nagasaki. While Nagasaki is a large city with a population of 430,000, Takeo City on the other end has less than 50,000 residents. This line doesn't extend to another major city, Fukuoka (Hakata Station), and there's not even a concrete plan for such an extension. What exactly are JR Kyushu and the Japanese government thinking? When we asked a local high school girl in Takeo-Onsen, she said she's not interested in riding it now, but hopes that one day she'll be able to take this Shinkansen to Hakata.
