Gunkanjima, also known as Hashima Island, is one of the 23 sites that make up the “Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution: Iron and Steel, Shipbuilding and Coal Mining,” which was registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage in 2015. This small rocky island housed over 5,000 people in 1960, with a population density more than nine times that of Tokyo, filled with high-rise buildings and a unique appearance. Now a deserted ruin, it attracts many photography enthusiasts who visit the island for tours. This episode is part of the "True Value of World Heritage" series, where we personally visit Gunkanjima. On the first day, strong sea winds prevented us from landing, but on the second day, we tried again and succeeded. We explored the island up close, observing the reinforced concrete residential buildings that have stood for decades. However, the question remains—where on this island is the World Heritage site?
