The Battle of Attu Island, Alaska USA 1943 | Holdouts in Attu Village | Easy Red 2 Mod

5/30/1943 Map and mission by Swadian_Squirrel https://steamcommunity.com/workshop/f... Although Colonel Yasuyo Yamasaki's final banzai charge ended organized Japanese resistance on Attu, isolated groups of survivors continued to evade capture around Attu Village and the surrounding hills. Hidden in abandoned buildings, rocky outcrops, and the island's rugged terrain, these holdouts refused to surrender despite having little food, ammunition, or hope of relief. American patrols spent several days combing the area, cautiously searching for snipers and small pockets of resistance that still posed a danger to occupation forces. By 30 May 1943, U.S. commanders declared Attu secure, but mopping-up operations continued as scattered Japanese soldiers emerged or were killed while resisting capture. Only a small number surrendered, reflecting the Japanese military's strong emphasis on fighting to the death rather than becoming prisoners of war. With the last holdouts eliminated, the United States regained full control of Attu Island, ending the only land battle fought on incorporated U.S. soil during the Second World War and paving the way for the invasion of nearby Kiska later that summer.
