The Moltkebrücke (Moltke Bridge) was one of the most critical and violently contested crossings during the Battle of Berlin. Spanning the Spree just west of the Reichstag, the bridge lay directly on the Soviet axis of advance into the government quarter. On 28 April 1945, Soviet troops of the 150th and 171st Rifle Divisions attempted to seize the bridge under intense German fire from well-prepared defensive positions around the Ministry of the Interior and nearby buildings. German defenders—primarily SS units and naval infantry—had turned the area into a killing zone, using machine guns, artillery, and panzerfausts to sweep the bridge and its approaches. Initial Soviet assaults were repulsed with heavy losses, and the bridge itself was littered with wrecked vehicles and fallen soldiers. After sustained artillery bombardment and repeated infantry assaults supported by tanks and assault guns firing at point-blank range, Soviet forces finally secured the Moltke Bridge late on 28 April. Its capture was a decisive breakthrough: once across, Red Army units could directly assault the Reichstag complex only a few hundred meters away. The fighting around Moltkebrücke exemplified the last phase of the Battle of Berlin—short distances, overwhelming firepower, and ferocious resistance focused on symbolic terrain. Holding the bridge even briefly delayed the inevitable, but its fall marked the beginning of the end for organized German defense in the heart of the Nazi capital.
