Batman Forever - Hype, Tie-Ins and Toys
Lets go back to 1995 and celebrate Batman Forever and its marketing, tie-In campaigns, toys and action figures, videogames, the fan hype and more in this nostalgic retrospective! The Hype and anticipation for the DC Comics movie Batman Forever was off the charts. It was like the Batman 1989 Batmania but in 1995. All the news stations, magazines, and newspapers were covering the movie. TV Specials and documentaries aired on TV like on the E Channel. There were many advertisements and marketing tie-ins for this comic book movie like the fast food toys at McDonalds where you could get glassware like mugs and cups for a dollar each, one for each of the main Batman Forever characters like Batman, Robin, the Riddler and Two-Face. There were pogs or bottle caps but no Happy Meal Toys. Kellogs had tattoos inside their cereal boxes. We had lots of toys and collectibles made for this movie. Kenner, which was really Hasbro at the time, made 4 inch action figures based on this movie. They even made two different batcave playsets like the bat cave command center and the larger 3 tier one. I had the Batwing, there was also a Batmobile and a 3 in 1 vehicle. the best Batman and Robin action figures from Kenner and Hasbro were the Guardians of Gotham two pack. I also fondly remember the Twoface figure with the coin and the Riddler figure with the brain drain helmet. And miniature toys similar to micromachines. And Applause Toys made a cookie jar, statues, figurines, mugs etc. There were many Batman Forever tie-in books like the sticker album, coloring book, official movie magazine, and behind the scenes book. Acclaim made two tie-in videogames. One for consoles like Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo, and the other was a beat em up game for arcades. The VHS and the Laserdisc would come out later. and the Score by Elliot Goldenthal and Soundtrack sold super well (the U2 song and the Seal song Kiss From a Rose are iconic!!) Joel Schumacher achieved what he set out to do. Val Kilmer was a great Batman. the entire cast nailed it like Jim Carrey, Nicole Kidman, Chris O'Donnell, Tommy Lee Jones and Michael Gough. I love the movie, instead of hating on it for not being a Tim Burton or Christopher Nolan Batman movie. And the Toys and figures and the tie-in campaigns and promos and everything surrounding the movie was fun. I hope you all enjoy this nostalgia heavy retrospective video essay.
