We try to get free solar hot water for the off-grid shower.

Heating water using a free and powerful energy source like the sun makes total sense. In this video, I show you my shortest path to solar water heating using things we had lying around. Ever wondered if you should have a thermosiphon(passive) or pumped (active) system? Well, I try both, and learnt a few things too (good and bad). This is a big part of our Karoo self sufficiency: a system I can maintain, tune and improve on the fly without needing outside parts from a random place. This video shows my entire process, a lazy and quick approach to a version 0.1 system which works pretty well. I already have some ideas for the ultimate improvements to the ultimate system! This system isn't built into the ideal enclosure, so the results are great considering the inefficiencies! 0:00 We're building a heater 0:30 Starting the pipe coils 2:00 Finished the coil 2:24 Day 2 2:42 Retrofitting the barrel 3:16 Supply connection 4:30 How it works 4:54 Filling the tank 5:22 Winter vs Summer 5:58 Giving up on thermosiphon 6:39 Going active with a pump 8:07 How hot does it get? 8:54 Ideas for improvement 9:52 Patreon Thanks Patreon members get benefits and help this channel live on.   / simple_earth   #simpleearth #selfsufficiency #survival #diy #offgrid #waterheater #solarpower #waterheater #homestead #karoo
