He Led a Gold Hunter Straight to Glen Canyon in 1883 — What the Navajo Guide Never Showed Him

In 1883, a Navajo leader named Hoskininni walked a gold prospector named Cass Hite into a canyon almost no outsider had ever entered. Hite found gold. He also found three stone bridges so massive that riders could pass beneath them without ducking, and an abandoned world of dwellings, granaries, and kivas tucked into the cliffs above. It took the rest of the country more than twenty years to believe his story was even real. But there is a question this documentary keeps circling back to, one no federal record has ever answered. Hoskininni's own people had walked this ground for generations before Hite ever arrived. So why does history remember the discovery under a prospector's name, and not the guide who already knew exactly where everything was? This film follows that canyon through every stage of its strange, layered history: the written record that finally caught up to it in nineteen hundred and four, the federal proclamation that protected it in nineteen hundred and eight, the dam that drowned much of it in nineteen hundred and sixty-three, and the drought that has spent the last two decades handing pieces of it back into the light. Along the way, we sit with an oral tradition passed down through Hoskininni's descendants that reads this same landscape very differently than any government ledger ever could, and with a few stranger, unresolved details the physical evidence has never fully explained. None of this is presented as settled fact. Some of it is genuinely still debated among historians and archaeologists. Some of it exists only in the accounts carried forward by the people who never stopped calling this place home. What is certain is that a canyon written off as empty, then as drowned, then as lost, keeps quietly proving otherwise. Certain interpretations discussed remain subjects of ongoing scholarly and cultural debate, and are presented as such rather than as established fact.
