What the Ojibwe Said Was Hidden Beneath Lake Superior

In 1863, a Michigan state geologist stood over a shallow, moss-covered pit on the Keweenaw Peninsula and wrote that it had been dug by "an ancient people... of whom history gives no account." He wasn't wrong that it was ancient. He was wrong about almost everything else. Along the shores of Lake Superior and across the island the Ojibwe call Minong — Isle Royale — archaeologists have mapped thousands of hand-dug mining pits, some worked continuously for over six thousand years. Stone hammers, wooden tools, and copper artifacts pulled from the ground tell a story of organized, coordinated labor passed down for generations. But when researchers add up every precontact copper object ever found across North America, the total doesn't come close to matching what these mines actually produced. Hundreds of millions of pounds of copper, extracted over thousands of years — and no one can fully account for where most of it went. For nineteenth-century surveyors, that gap became an excuse to invent a vanished "lost race" rather than credit the ancestors of the Ojibwe people still living on the land around them. But Ojibwe oral tradition and the name Minong itself never lost track of who these miners were. The written record eventually caught up. The missing copper never did. So where did it go — traded along routes we haven't traced, endlessly recycled into new tools, or still waiting somewhere, undiscovered? This video presents documented archaeological findings alongside Indigenous oral tradition as two historical sources of equal standing. Where explanations remain debated among historians and archaeologists, that uncertainty is presented as such — this is not a definitive claim, but an open historical question we encourage viewers to research further and think critically about.
