The Golden Gate Bridge was completed in 1937 after four years of construction and, at 2.7 kilometers long, was the longest suspension bridge in the world until 1964. Its distinctive International Orange color, chosen by consulting architect Irving Morrow, was selected to complement the natural surroundings while remaining highly visible in the fog that frequently blankets the bay. On a sunny day, however, that same vivid orange stands out dramatically against the deep blue of the Pacific Ocean and the clear California sky, creating one of the most photographed and most filmed views in the entire United States. Crossing the bridge northbound marks a striking transition in the landscape. Behind you, the dense urban skyline of San Francisco recedes into the distance, while ahead the green hills of the Marin Headlands rise up, leading toward the wine country of Sonoma and Napa and the rugged coastline of Northern California beyond.
