Alberobello is the undisputed highlight of any Apulian itinerary, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996 and home to over 1,500 trulli, the ancient whitewashed limestone dwellings with conical grey roofs that have become the defining symbol of the region. Built using a dry stone technique without mortar, the trulli of Alberobello are found nowhere else on earth in such concentration and represent one of the most visually striking architectural traditions in all of Europe. From Alberobello the drive continues to Martina Franca, an elegant hilltop city renowned for its spectacular baroque architecture, its annual opera festival, and its position at the highest point of the Valle d'Itria. The white facades, ornate church fronts, and lively piazzas of Martina Franca offer a very different but equally compelling Apulian experience. The drive concludes in Locorotondo, whose name literally means round place, a perfectly circular hilltop village of gleaming white streets, arched doorways, and flower filled balconies that offers panoramic views over the Valle d'Itria and its patchwork of olive groves, vineyards, and scattered trulli farmhouses stretching toward the horizon.
