(Reynar Banham: "The New Brutalism") -- This analysis will deconstruct the Oscar nominated 2024 film THE BRUTALIST. I will use Reyner Banham's seminal 1955 essay "The New Brutalism" and Frederic Spotts' H1TLER AND THE POWER OF AESTHETICS as informative texts to support my thesis. The film essentially portrays a "belligerent victimhood." We will discuss Bauhaus and Brutalism, Nazi New Germania and Europa architecture and the nuances of revolutionary movements in Modernity, Futurism, and overarching Aesthetic Terror1sm. The reaction (Brutalism) to Nazi architecture stands more devoid of humanity than the Brutality of the buildings to which it reacts. The aim of THE BRUTALIST is overtly political in a subversive anonymity. This is the belligerent victimhood of global1st and postmodern politick. Toth wants his buildings to stand the test of time and political upheavals, to shove a hulking structure into the face of the onlooker-- just as he thinks the concentrat1on c4mps blight the countryside of European citizenry ("how could they not see?!") and replace the skyline. He intends anti-aestheticism to be a rallying point for future subversive movements who will make war on the old order of civilized hierarchy by means of equitable, industrial vigor in a faceless barage, co-opting the means of construction to ultimately deconstruct any societal goodness. This is utterly Satanic. He manages to build a structure on a hilltop dominating a town and financed by a capitalist titan that displays a Cross in absentia-- a building in which no people will worship and remind them only of death.
