In fact, everything about me has become unnatural; I've become an unnatural self." (p. 212) "He found himself fading out, becoming strangely like the inert television set which he had just unplugged. You have to be with other people, he thought. In order to live at all. I mean, before they came here I could stand it, being alone in the building. But now it's changed. You can't go back, he thought. You can't go from people to non-people." (p. 188) -- What a book. WHAT A BOOK. I've covered SNOW CRASH, NEUROMANCER, countless cybernetic films, and dystopian literature and themes through every prism, but Philip K. Dick's novel stands high in the pantheon. Many narrative works spend their plots explaining the circumstances-- exposition-- but this book manages to avoid this-- things are in flux, and the changes drive the plot. On one level, two worlds, East and West, work in tandem within a Brave New World/ 1984 framework in a globalist post-nuke future; on another level entirely, Earth and Off-World intermingle in the consciousness of whoever still roams the deadscape. Nothing lives. The bleakest book I've covered since THE ROAD, this book captures our literary motto: "what's past is prologue." -- BRET EASTON ELLIS: THE SHARDS & LESS THAN ZERO LITERARY ANALYSIS here:    • BRET EASTON ELLIS' RECENT NOVEL THE SHARDS...   CORMAC McCARTHY: ALL THE PRETTY HORSES ANALYSIS here:    • CORMAC MCCARTHY: ALL THE PRETTY HORSES ANA...   DARK FALL: FINAL GIRL Analysis    • FINAL GIRL: FRIDAY THE 13th, BARBARIAN, & ...   LUNAR PARK: BRET EASTON ELLIS ANALYSIS here:    • LUNAR PARK: A Maelstrom of Lying   NITECRAWLER and EDGAR ALLAN POE Analysis here:    • MANIPULATION/ UNRELIABLE NARRATOR: NIGHTCR...   -- INTRO and OUTRO music by    / @rooxg   Rooxg: "Altered Self" here:    • ROOXG - ALTERED SELF
