Desertification, a process of soil degradation caused by human activity and not a natural phenomenon like deserts, has become one of Spain's major environmental challenges. The Atlas of Desertification in Spain reveals that 41% of the national territory shows signs of deterioration, a figure that reflects the pressure exerted by the overexploitation of aquifers, intensive agriculture, and poor land management. Eighty percent of the Spanish population lives in arid zones, including major cities such as Madrid, Barcelona, ​​Seville, and Valencia. Objective Planet analyzes why desertification is so difficult to reverse once it has begun and how climate projections point to a worsening of the problem. Rising temperatures, reduced rainfall, and the increased frequency of extreme weather events are accelerating the degradation of arid zones, which already occupy a substantial part of the country. Desertification is a process driven by human activity, but it is still preventable if sustainable policies and responsible land management are adopted.
