Every Fruit of the Holy Spirit Explained — And Why You've Been Trying to Grow Them the Wrong Way

Every Fruit of the Holy Spirit Explained — And Why You've Been Trying to Grow Them the Wrong Way Paul and Silas are sitting in a Roman prison. Their backs have been torn open by rods. Their feet are in stocks. And they are singing. Not quietly. Loudly enough that the other prisoners can hear them. That is not personality. That is not willpower. That is something growing — and it has a name. In this video, we walk through all nine fruits of the Holy Spirit — love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control — but not as a checklist. Paul chose a very specific Greek word when he wrote Galatians 5:22. He did not write ergon — works, things you achieve. He wrote karpos — fruit. Things that grow. The difference between those two words changes everything about how you approach the Christian life. We look at what each fruit actually means in the original Greek, why the churches in Galatia were destroying each other trying to perform their way to holiness, and what Jesus meant in John 15 when he said the branch's only job is to remain. And then there's Paul, who on the same night God opened every prison door and snapped every chain — stayed. If that is not faithfulness, what is? The fruit was never the goal. It was always the evidence. The question is not which of the nine you need to work on. The question is what is disconnecting you from the vine. —————————————————— TIMESTAMPS —————————————————— 00:00 — Two men singing in a Roman prison 01:45 — Why Paul chose the word "fruit" and not "works" 03:20 — The crisis that produced Galatians 5 05:10 — The vine, the branch, and the one word Jesus kept repeating 07:00 — Love: the father who ran before the apology 09:15 — Joy: the man whose face looked like an angel while being stoned 11:20 — Peace: the storm, the boat, and the man who was asleep 13:05 — Patience: twenty-five years of silence 15:10 — Kindness and Goodness: the woman in the dirt and the whip of cords 18:00 — Faithfulness: why Paul stayed in a prison he could have left 20:10 — Gentleness: the warhorse that was trained, not broken 21:45 — Self-control: the decision made the night before 23:00 — The garden, the rain, and the only question that matters —————————————————— FURTHER READING —————————————————— Scripture — Galatians 5:13–26 | John 15:1–5 | Acts 16:16–34 — Acts 7:54–60 | Luke 15:11–32 | Philippians 4:4–7 — 1 Corinthians 9:24–27 | Numbers 12:3 Historical sources — Tertullian, Apologeticus (~197 AD) — Augustine, Confessions (~397 AD), Book XIII Greek word study — karpos vs ergon (Galatians 5:22) — menō — abide/remain (John 15:4–5) — makrothumia — long-suffering (James 5:7–11) — prautes — meekness/gentleness (Matthew 5:5) —————————————————— What are the fruits of the Holy Spirit, and why does it feel so hard to actually live them? What does it mean that Paul called them fruit and not achievements? What is the difference between the fruit of the Spirit and the gifts of the Spirit? Why does trying harder to be more loving or more patient so often make things worse? These are questions this video works through carefully — using the original Greek words, the historical context of Galatia, and the lives of the people in Scripture who actually lived these qualities before they were ever written down. #HolySpirit #FruitOfTheSpirit #BibleStudy
