It has been four years since we moved into our 30-year-old seaside fixer-upper. We are slowly nurturing this house into our ideal "forever home," handling as many repairs and improvements as we can with our own hands. 🏡🌊 In this video, we’re customizing a professionally installed Eusideroxylon zwageri (Ulin) wood deck to perfectly suit our lifestyle. 🔨✨ ● Customizing and Maintaining the Wood Deck 🪚 Learning from our previous experience with a deck that eventually rotted, we commissioned professionals to build the main structure using ultra-durable Ulin hardwood. From there, we took over the DIY customization: installing escape-proof cat fences and a dedicated cat door, and transforming the space underneath into a functional storage unit. Although Ulin is famous for lasting 30 years without maintenance, we decided to give it a fresh sanding while we’re still physically active to bring back its beautiful original luster. ● Spring Garden Prep and the Rhythm of Fermentation 🌿 In the greenhouse, the journey of growing summer vegetables from seed has begun, while out in the garden, the butterbur sprouts (fukinotou) have started to bloom. Back in the kitchen, I’m baking sourdough bread—made without dry yeast, using only flour, water, and time.
