Franz Reichleitner was the final commandant of the Sobibor extermination camp and one of the central perpetrators of Operation Reinhard, the Nazi plan to murder the Jews of German-occupied Poland during World War II. Under his command, Sobibor became one of the deadliest killing centers of the Holocaust. Born in Austria in 1906, Reichleitner joined the Nazi Party and the SS before the war. He first gained experience in mass murder through the Nazi “euthanasia” program (T-4), where thousands of disabled and mentally ill victims were killed. This program served as a training ground for the men who would later carry out genocide on an industrial scale. In September 1942, Reichleitner assumed command of Sobibor after the transfer of Franz Stangl. As SS-Obersturmführer, he oversaw deportations, selections, and the systematic murder of approximately 250,000 Jews, most of whom were gassed with carbon monoxide within hours of arrival. Survivor testimonies describe Reichleitner as distant, calculating, and ruthless—rarely present, yet feared by both prisoners and subordinates. Sobibor was designed to deceive. Victims were told they had reached a transit camp and ordered to undress for “showers.” Within minutes, they were forced into gas chambers, while guards used noise and violence to suppress panic. Reichleitner enforced strict efficiency: transports arriving in the camp were fully “liquidated” the same day. In October 1943, prisoners led by Alexander Pechersky launched the Sobibor uprising, killing several SS officers and escaping through minefields and gunfire. Although most escapees were later captured, the revolt forced the Nazis to shut down the camp. Reichleitner was absent at the time but was later ordered to dismantle Sobibor and erase evidence of its existence. In January 1944, Reichleitner was killed by Yugoslav partisans near present-day Rijeka, Croatia. He died without trial, punishment, or remorse.
