In Menorca, at Cala Blanca, restoration starts from a different kind of damage. In 2011, a bentonite spill covered around 1,800 m² of Posidonia oceanica meadow. More than a decade later, the signs are still visible. Before any intervention, understanding the extent of the impact was essential: mapping the affected area, assessing the condition of the seabed, and defining what recovery could realistically look like. Restoration here is not immediate. From impact assessment to the first steps of recovery, this pilot shows how even localized events can have long-term consequences on marine ecosystems. One message stands out: restoration takes time, but inaction costs more. As local actors and scientists highlight, protecting what remains is as important as restoring what has been lost. This is where ARTEMIS steps in: not only testing restoration approaches, but connecting science, local action, and governance to build pathways that can be replicated across the Mediterranean. Because without continuity, restoration stops.
