The Story of Noah Explained (It's Not the Story You Were Told)
We paint this story on the walls of nurseries. Giraffes leaning out of a little boat. A smiling rainbow. A duck. It is, by a wide margin, the darkest story in the book of Genesis, and almost every detail we remember about it is wrong. The text never says two of every animal. For the clean animals, it says seven pairs. The rain lasts forty days, but nobody is on that boat for forty days, they are on it for more than a year. The man at the center of it never speaks a single word, and when he finally does, at the very end, it is a curse. The boat is not shaped like a boat at all: it has no sail, no rudder and no oars, and it is built to the proportions of a temple. And the rainbow is not a rainbow. In Hebrew it is a weapon. In this video we walk through Genesis 6 to 9, in order, and follow what the text actually says. The strange four verses about the sons of God and the Nephilim. The verse that explains everything that follows: "every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually." A God who does not begin in rage but in grief. Then the blueprint, the pitch, the three decks, the door in the side, and the first appearance of the word "covenant" in the entire Bible. Then the flood itself, told the way Genesis tells it, with the fountains of the great deep bursting open and the windows of the heavens flung wide, because this is not a storm. It is the second and third days of creation being undone. It is Genesis chapter one, run backwards. Then the hinge, three words at the exact center of the story: "But God remembered Noah." A wind moves over the face of the waters, exactly as it did on the first page of the Bible. The waters fall. The ark grounds on the mountains of Ararat, plural, because Genesis never names a peak. A raven that never returns. A dove with no place to set her foot. A hand reaching out of the dark to take her in. And then a freshly plucked olive leaf, and a world beginning again. And then the two things nobody paints on a nursery wall. God's promise never to do it again, given for exactly the same reason he did it in the first place. And the ending: an old man, a vineyard, a cup, and two sons walking backwards with a cloak, refusing to look. Even the last righteous man on earth walked off that ark and needed to be covered. What you will see in this video: Why "two of every kind" is not what the text says (Gen 6:19 vs Gen 7:2) The real numbers: 40 days of rain, 150 days of water, and roughly 370 days in the ark The sons of God and the Nephilim, and the three ways people read them (Gen 6:1-4) Why the ark has temple proportions, three decks, and no way to steer (Gen 6:14-16) The first appearance of the word "covenant" in the Bible (Gen 6:18) The flood as the un-creation of Genesis 1 (Gen 7:11) "And the LORD shut him in" - who closed the door (Gen 7:16) The hinge of the whole story: "But God remembered Noah" (Gen 8:1) The raven, the dove, and the olive leaf (Gen 8:6-12) Why the mountains of Ararat are plural, and there is no "Mount Ararat" in the Bible (Gen 8:4) The altar, and why the seven pairs of clean animals suddenly make sense (Gen 8:20) Why God promises never to flood the earth again for the very reason he flooded it (Gen 8:21) The rainbow as a war bow, hung up, unstrung, and aimed away (Gen 9:13-16) The ending nobody talks about: the vineyard, the tent, and the curse of Canaan, not Ham (Gen 9:20-27) Welcome to The Unpacked Bible.
