Are predictable punchlines funnier? Here's why...
In this video, we explore new scientific research that suggests that predictable punchlines might actually be funnier than unpredictable ones. We start with an example of "cat fail" videos, where the title of the video tells you what the surprise is going to be, yet they still get millions of views. The answer to why predictable punchlines are funny lies in something called "anticipatory pleasure," which is similar to building comedic tension. We go on to explore conventional comedy wisdom and research studies that suggest predictable punchlines tend to be funnier. However, this is not to say that unpredictable punchlines can't be funny, and we can use both to create variety in our performances. We also explore the relationship between surprise and laughter, and how the psychological phenomenon of "priming" plays a role in creating anticipation and humor. The video features examples from Demetri Martin and Jon Stewart, who purposely give hints about the punchline in the setup, allowing the audience to anticipate something funny and prepare to laugh, without having the surprise in the punchline ruined. At the end of the video, we provide tips and tricks that you can use to be funnier, so stick around, and don't forget to like and subscribe for future videos.
