The Secret Island Where Whales are Still Hunted (Bequia)

Sailing the Grenadines learning about whaling and model yacht building. We hit strong trade winds sailing on our voyage up the Caribbean islands. We visit union island and the famous snorkelling spot of Tobago Cays just of Mayreu,, anchoring off Union island and enjoying the quiet unspoilt bays. Our favourite island was Bequia an adorable island with a fantastic heritage museum featuring a fascinating talk about the history of the islands from Caribs to Europeans and the slave trade. Perhaps the most thought provoking was the live history of Whaling on the island sanctioned under International Whaling rules .Traditional equipment is used and great danger is involved in the hunt and dispatch of the hump back whales. Only one per year being caught , the meat from which is used to supplement meagre local protein supplies on the island. We are still undecided on this continuing practice, which will continue until ways are found to provide islanders with better sources of protein at affordable prices. More exploring and we discover a hawksbill turtle sanctuary which rescues turtle eggs and raises them for release at 5 yrs old .
