Malta PM warns UK over Brexit
(29 Nov 2016) The prime minister of Malta, which takes over the EU's rotating presidency in January, insisted on Tuesday that "there cannot be a decoupling of the four freedoms, the basic principles of the European Union." "We, for one, want a fair deal for the United Kingdom but it cannot be a superior deal to what membership is," Joseph Muscat said after meeting German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin. Muscat said he had "seldom witnessed" such common ground among EU member states as on the subject of Brexit. Merkel said she had "no doubts that we live up to this strategy we've agreed on." The two leaders' stance dismisses suggestions that bilateral agreements could be made with EU members ahead of the UK's exit negotiations.
