Stem cells are the medical revolution of our time. Long used to treat certain diseases, such as bone marrow transplants, stem cells are now being widely studied for future medical applications. Like any new discovery, this revolution can be frightening from an ethical standpoint, but by understanding what it is and overcoming the initial fear, we will understand the hope that these new studies and gene therapy can offer to patients who currently have no prospects. After pursuing a PhD in Embryology in Italy, Graziano completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Cambridge, UK, during which he focused on the study of embryonic stem cells. He subsequently received numerous international awards and funding, thanks to which he established his own research laboratory at the Department of Molecular Medicine in Padua in 2014. He is currently an associate professor teaching Embryology and Stem Cell Biology at the University of Padua. His research focuses on the study of stem cells, combining experimental and computational approaches, and their use as a model of neurodegenerative diseases.
