Sylvia Ng | MALAYSIA'S SHUTTLE STAR

Sylvia Ng Meow Eng, born on September 24, 1949, in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, is a former badminton player who left an indelible mark on the sport. She achieved remarkable success both nationally and internationally. In 1969, Sylvia secured gold in women’s singles at the Southeast Asia Games in Rangoon. Four years later, she repeated her triumph in the same event. Her partnership with Ng Boon Bee yielded victories, including the 1970 Belgian International mixed doubles title. At the 1970 Asian Games, she clinched bronze in women’s singles and gold in mixed doubles with Ng Boon Bee. Sylvia’s prowess extended to the Commonwealth Games, where she won bronze in women’s doubles alongside Rosalind Singha Ang in 1974. Notably, she made history at the 1978 Commonwealth Games, becoming the first Asian woman to win badminton singles gold and the first Malaysian female athlete to achieve gold in the Games’ history.
