And there you have it—now you have a huge clove of garlic in your hands! The native range of this plant is in Africa, Asia, and Europe. But that doesn't mean you can't plant it in Brazil, for example — it means that in the regions mentioned, the plant follows the characteristics of the soils, climates, and ecosystems of those places. In Brazilian lands, giant garlic is considered an exotic plant, that is, not native to our region. Giant garlic needs full sun exposure and a neutral soil pH to grow. Furthermore, it adapts best to a clayey and well-drained soil. Good soil drainage is also fundamental for cultivating this plant, as it does not tolerate waterlogging well. Its flower has a purplish color, and its adult size can reach almost 1 meter in height. Some care must be taken during the planting of giant garlic, such as the abundant amount of sun the plant needs — at least 6 hours of direct sunlight on most days. Giant garlic can even grow in partial shade, but the chance of it becoming a "normal garlic" is greater if cultivated in this way. A planting location protected from strong winds is ideal, as is a layer of mulch around the plants to help protect the roots from extreme temperatures. Elephant garlic generally has few problems with pests and diseases, with slugs potentially damaging young plants, especially during wet seasons. Fungal diseases and rot frequently affect plants growing in humid conditions, but the use of chemical insecticides is not recommended if you are planting the garlic to eat it at home, for example. In that case, you can simply remove the diseased plants and start again in better growing conditions.
