Emergency response vehicles and more on Facebook:   / einsatzfahrtenundso   On June 29, 2018, at 8:44 a.m., numerous emergency responders were dispatched to a reported ship collision with people in the Rhine River near the Rhine ferry between Bonn-Mehlem and Königswinter. Upon arrival, it was determined that while no people were in the Rhine, two cargo ships had collided. One of the ships was carrying clay, the other xylene, a flammable solvent. Both ships were taking on water. The ship carrying clay was so badly damaged that a massive influx of water caused its bow to sink. The captain managed to maneuver the vessel out of the shipping channel and ground it near Königswinter. The water ingress on the tanker, at approximately 30 cubic meters, was not significant enough to impair its buoyancy. Two crew members on the tanker sustained minor injuries as a result of the collision. They were brought ashore by a multi-purpose boat from the Königswinter Fire Department and then handed over to the ambulance service. No fuel or cargo is leaking from either vessel, so there is no environmental hazard. The incident command unit, along with the Bonn Fire Department's fireboat and multi-purpose boat, will remain on site until approximately 9:00 p.m. for safety measures. In the evening, the water police and the Waterways and Shipping Authority will take over securing the vessels and coordinate the salvage operations. The following units were involved: Head of Department, Duty Officer, Duty Officer, Water Rescue Advisor, Fireboat, Multi-purpose boat, Water Rescue Equipment Vehicle, Firefighting Unit 3 + Hazardous Materials Reconnaissance Vehicle, German Life Saving Association (DLRG), Königswinter Fire Department, Remagen Fire Ferry, Cologne Fireboat, Water Police, Bonn Public Utilities, Cologne Rescue Helicopter, Bonn Police Helicopter In addition, Firefighting Unit 21 staffed Fire Station 2, and Firefighting Unit 31 staffed Fire Station 3. Approximately 70 emergency personnel from the Bonn and Königswinter fire departments, as well as the fireboats from Cologne and Remagen, were involved.
