The real history of the PC-FX games console disaster - Bye Bye Hudson Episode 4

The 5th Generation Console race was on, with more players than ever entering the marketplace or making their last gasp attempts to stay relevant. Into this febrile marketplace, NEC Home Electronics launched the PC-FX on December 23rd 1994, and it bombed hard. How on earth did they get their follow up to PC Engine so wrong? The history of the PC-FX is to put it mildly murky, with rumours that have become fact over time, and misunderstandings about goings on becoming concrete evidence. Untangling the mysteries to get to the bottom of the PC-FX's origins and its development has required finding the original Japanese sources to unravel what actually happened and flesh out the contemporary English language reports with what was really going on. For example, Electronic Gaming Monthly reported the PC-FX's nearest predecessor, the Hudson HuC62 platform as being from NEC. It absolutely wasn't, multiply this up, with poor edits to Wikipedia and years of forum posts that have been taken at face value in write ups on the system that don't reference concrete sources, it ends up a bit of a pickle.
