ঠাকুরবাড়ীর টমেটো মাছ | Tomato Fish Curry from Thakurbari

প্রথমেই এ রান্নার বহুল প্রচলিত বলে দেগে দেওয়ার আগে মনে রাখা দরকার যে আমরা বলছি প্রায় এক শতাব্দীর আগেকার কথা, যখন টমেটো আমাদের দেশজ সবজি হিসেবে ধরাই হতো না (সত্যিই তো টমেটো এসেছে বিদেশ থেকে)। তাকে ডাকা হতো ‘বিলাতী বেগুন’ নামে। কিন্তু রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর খাবার নিয়ে পরীক্ষা নিরীক্ষা করতে অত্যন্ত ভালবাসতেন, আর ঠাকুরবাড়ী খোলা মনে টমেটোকে আপন করে নিয়েছিলো রোজের রান্নায়। এ রান্না তারই ফসল। পরে টমেটো জনপ্রিয়তা লাভ করে হয়ে ওঠে আমাদের পাতের নিত্যসঙ্গী। তখন কিন্তু এ রান্না সত্যিই দুর্লভ ছিলো| এ হাল্কা অথচ সুস্বাদু পদটি তারিয়ে তারিয়ে খান গরম ভাতের সাথে। Before coming to conclusions about this recipe as a common one, we must remember that we are talking about a time period around a century back, when tomatoes were considered a vegetable not ours (it came from abroad in reality), and was referred to as ‘Biliti Begun’, literally translating to ‘an aubergine of foreign origin’. However, Tagore loved experimenting with food, and his household was ready to embrace tomatoes with open arms and use them in daily dishes. Hence was born this dish. Later on, it gained popularity and is now an almost household dish. At that time, however, it was really a rare one. Enjoy this wonderfully light yet tasty fish curry with rice.
