Menyusuri Sungai Mahakam 1933: Dari Balikpapan ke Samarinda
This documentary takes viewers along the Mahakam River in 1933, starting from the port of Balikpapan to Samarinda, then through the interior of East Kalimantan and the coast of Berau. This footage comes from the colonial film archives of the Dutch East Indies, capturing the river's journey as the lifeblood of the people of East Kalimantan in the 1930s. At that time, the Mahakam River served as a major transportation route, connecting the coast, cities, coal mines, and the interior. The film depicts river navigation, life in the city of Samarinda, mining, riverine settlements, and the natural challenges of the upper Mahakam region, which remained untamed and largely untouched by modernization. Beyond documenting the colonial journey, the film also presents a social and cultural portrait of the people of East Kalimantan in the past—from multicultural life in river towns, the role of the Kutai and Berau Sultanates, to the relationship between humans and the river and forest. The film was produced in 1933 by the Dutch colonial government and is now housed as part of the visual archive collection at the Eye Filmmuseum in Amsterdam. Through historical narrative and visual footage, this documentary is presented as a reflection on the history, environment, and major changes that occurred in East Kalimantan. 🎥 Title: Cruising the Mahakam River 1933: From Balikpapan to Samarinda 📚 Category: History | Documentary | Colonial Archives #MahakamRiver #Mahakam1933 #EastKalimantan #HistoricalDocumentary #ColonialFilm #IndonesianHistory #ColonialArchives #SamarindaTempoDulu #BalikpapanTempoDulu
