Dutch New Guinea 1962: The Last Portrait Before Moving to Indonesia This rare documentary takes us through life in Dutch New Guinea (Nederlands-Nieuw-Guinea) in 1962, the final period of Dutch rule before the territory was handed over to the United Nations (UN/UNTEA) and subsequently became part of Indonesian administration on May 1, 1963. The journey begins in Hollandia (now Jayapura/Port Numbay), showcasing the lives of European and Papuan communities, including activities at the Hollandia Yacht Club, hydroplane races on Lake Sentani, water skiing, folk sports festivals, and Papuan arts and cultural performances. The film then takes us to Raja Ampat, showcasing the islanders' lives, educational activities, voyages on traditional proa boats, missionary journeys, and various traditions and customs that persisted in the early 1960s. The documentary then follows a medical expedition into the interior of Papua. The footage shows the struggles of health workers to reach remote areas, the treatment of yaws, the construction of community facilities, and the lives and customs of various Papuan tribes rarely captured on camera at that time. The final section of the film chronicles political developments leading up to the end of Dutch rule, from the formation of the New Guinea Council in 1961, the general election and the inauguration of the council, to the major changes following Trikora, the 1962 New York Agreement, the UNTEA government, the handover of administration to Indonesia on May 1, 1963, and continuing with the Act of Free Choice (Pepera) in 1969.
