10‑Year‑Old Bulgarian girl with cerebral palsy can walk after China's innovative surgery in Shanghai

At the Shanghai Children’s Medical Center, 10-year-old girl - Lia from Bulgaria is undergoing rehabilitation training. Once confined to a wheelchair due to severe muscle spasticity caused by cerebral palsy, she can now walk independently and step over small obstacles. About 80 percent of children with cerebral palsy experience spasticity, which leads to involuntary muscle contraction and difficulty walking. After learning that another Bulgarian child had regained the ability to walk following surgery in Shanghai, Lia’s parents contacted the hospital. Doctors later confirmed she was a suitable candidate for surgery. The procedure, known as Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR), was refined by Chinese doctors through innovative techniques that improve precision, reduce trauma, and speed up recovery. Lia traveled to Shanghai last May for the surgery and was able to stand just ten days later.
