Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak warned against a prolonged occupation of southern Lebanon, asserting that eliminating Hezbollah would require a full-scale invasion of Lebanon, a move that would risk Israel losing its US veto power in the UN Security Council. In an interview with Israel's Channel 12 on Friday, Barak stated that Netanyahu might launch an attack targeting Beirut's southern suburbs or sites in southern Lebanon, aiming to provoke a Hezbollah response. This, he warned, could escalate the conflict, transforming it from a struggle with Hezbollah into a regional war with Iran. The former prime minister indicated that Netanyahu might resort to several scenarios if he feels he is about to lose the Knesset elections scheduled for October, while also cautioning against the possibility of actions taken to obstruct the electoral process.
