Tsunami? The impacts of the string of powerful earthquakes that struck near Mexico and Guatemala

A powerful 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck off Mexico's southern Pacific coast Friday near the Guatemala border, shaking communities across southern Mexico and Central America while prompting tsunami precautions. Authorities in Mexico and Guatemala said there were no immediate reports of significant damage or casualties. Harold Tobin, the director of the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network, joined KOMO News Meteorologist George Waldenberger to talk about what the shake could mean for Central America. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake struck about 30 miles southwest of Aquiles Serdán in the Mexican state of Chiapas at a depth of roughly 9 miles. The main quake was preceded by a smaller offshore tremor and followed by at least five aftershocks ranging in magnitude from 5.1 to 6.0. The earthquake was widely felt from Mexico City to El Salvador. In Tapachula, a city near Mexico's border with Guatemala, residents described the shaking as initially mild before it intensified. -------------------------------------------------- For more on the story: https://komonews.com/news/nation-worl... _______________ Stay up to date with our social media:   / komonews     / komonews     / komo4     / komo4seattle   Download our iOS App: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/komo-...
