What's Opera Doc? Replicating Maurice Nobel With Gouache: How To Paint Like a Mid-Century Pro! #demo
In this video I replicate Maurice Noble, an artist who I absolutely LOVE but haven't replicated, until now. Maurice Noble (May 1911 - May 2001) was an American background artist, director, and layout designer. His contributions to the animation industry spanned more than sixty years and his work is LEGENDARY. Growing up in the 70s and 80s I watched a load of cartoons, and I was especially into the witty and often surreal, Merry Melodies series of animated shorts produced by Warner Brothers between 1931 to 1969 (companion series of, "Looney Tunes.") Even before I had any awareness of the artist's hand, I was captivated by the backgrounds created by Maurice Noble. His work perfectly combined bold graphic shapes with expressive, gestural line work, and technicolour palettes. And, in my late 20s, when I started making art of my own, hints of his style crept through. Of the Merry Melodies cartoons, "What's Opera Doc?" is in my top 5 and I will be replicating a whole series from this beautiful and hilarious short. I will also start replicating scenes from the rest of my "top 5" list! If there are any scenes you'd like me to try from your favourite cartoon, let me know! Supplies Used: *Holbein acrylic gouache: black, white, orange, luminous red, ultramarine, red violet, magenta *Small, medium, and 1/2" angled, flathead watercolour brush *Illustration board *Masking tape (use washi or "froggy" tape instead to avoid rips) #mauricenoble #warnerbrothers #merrymelodies #cartoonart #animation #animationdemo #artdemo #replicatingart #artreplication #artistdemo #paintingdemo #speedpainting #speedpaint #gouache #gouachedemo #cartoondemo #midcenturyillustration #looneytunes #holbein #holbeingouache
