This is rare free skating footage of Riku Miura and Shoya Ichihashi, the “RikuSho” pair, from the 2018 World Junior Figure Skating Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria. Even so, 16-year-old Riku Miura never looks rattled and immediately pushes forward with the performance. That strength—the ability not to carry a mistake with her—is one of the same qualities that still makes her so compelling today. Later in the program, there’s also a striking move full of sharpness and athleticism that almost looks like a karate roundhouse kick. And after the skate, the Kiss and Cry exchange with a young Bruno Marcotte is another moment worth watching. Miura/Ichihashi scored 86.92 in the free skate. With a total of 137.22 points, they finished 10th overall at the 2018 World Juniors. It wasn’t a competition where they surged dramatically up the standings, but skating through on that stage and coming away with a Top 10 finish still meant a great deal.
