Power-Up – ex BBC Marconi Mk3 TV Camera

In a slight departure from our usual style of video presentation we focus (pardon the pun) on some of the trials and tribulations in getting a complex TV camera from yesteryear into working order. This particular camera, the Marconi Mk 3 I.O. (Image Orthicon), was selected for display at the BVWS Radiotech 2026 event and the plan was to be able to display it in working order. Applying power to valve-based vintage equipment demands that a particular process of care and attention is to be followed, particularly as such equipment is likely to have been out of use for some time, likely extending to many years. Unsurprisingly, the camera would not initially work without some extra attention and a couple of faults had to be attended to before a raster appeared with some video content – just... Only two faults plus a purpose-built focus current PSU for a shadow of a picture to appear? More will be revealed in Part 2 of this story – stay tuned!
